REPLACED Review

Developed by Sad Cat Studios and published by Thunderful Publishing, REPLACED is a 2D cyberpunk style side scroller based in an alternate world in the 1980s. The developers define it as: “Expose the sinister secrets of Phoenix Corporation as R.E.A.C.H., an AI trapped in a human body. Set in an alternate 1980s America scarred by nuclear catastrophe, navigate a dark cyberpunk thriller in this narrative-driven 2.5D platformer blending cinematic exploration with fluid, free-flow action.”
Gameplay
With any side scroller I play, I prefer using a controller rather than a keyboard—it just feels more natural. While REPLACED does support keyboard and mouse, I highly recommend playing with a controller.
Right from the start, the movement feels incredibly smooth. The character animation blends seamlessly with each action, and that fluidity becomes even more noticeable during combat sequences.

The combat itself is simple but satisfying. It’s not overloaded with complex button combinations you need to memorize—you can jump in and start swinging. That brings me to the finishers. After dealing enough damage, you can use your gun to trigger a cinematic finishing move (I didn’t see the mechanic officially labeled as a “finisher,” but that’s the best way to describe it). The simplicity of the combat, combined with these stylish finishers, makes encounters feel rewarding. You’ll find yourself eager for the next fight just to see how cleanly you can execute your moves.
Story & Worldbuilding
The first thing you’ll notice is the atmosphere, it’s gorgeous. The lighting is exceptionally well done, adding depth and subtle warmth to the otherwise dark foreground. You play as R.E.A.C.H., an AI trapped in a human body, navigating a post-apocalyptic version of 1980s America shaped by nuclear catastrophe. As you explore, you gradually uncover the mystery behind your creation.

Each area in REPLACED features highly detailed, derelict environments that enhance immersion. It’s refreshing to see developers pay close attention to the small details—those are often what elevate a good game to a great one. The craftsmanship here makes it clear that the team truly cares about delivering a cohesive and intentional experience.

Graphics & Audio
Beyond its striking 2D pixel art style, the animation work stands out. Movement, combat, jumping, and shooting all feel polished and responsive. The sound design during fights complements the action well, and the soundtrack matches the game’s tone nicely.
That said, the default audio setting is extremely loud on first boot. It seems like many modern releases default to max volume, and it catches me off guard every time.
Replayability & Value
REPLACED is set to release on Xbox and Game Pass, though it’s unclear whether there will be a physical edition or a digital-only launch. There’s currently no mention of a PlayStation release, which is unfortunate since that’s my main platform.
I’ll skip my usual deep dive into value and keep it simple: if you’re a fan of 2D side scrollers, REPLACED should absolutely be on your radar. If it launches at $29 or below, it would feel like a steal considering the evident time, care, and craftsmanship poured into it.
